We begin with the rescue and then are led through the happy times, and then into the abuse. David kept counting time in his head in order to make the time pass faster. He had to find work and then give his mother all the money he earned. These books A Child Called It, The Lost Boy, and A Man Named Dave , inspiring as they are, are also very hard to take. He comes up with ideas just to find ways to eat. And finally his rescue from a social worker. His mother kindly bought him a pair of ice skates, the only present she bought him in years. Mother came home one day, filled the tub with cold water, and made David lie in it.
Dave no longer cared about avoiding his mother's rage. One could argue that The Lost Boy is one boy's attempt to find a family that loves him. David uses his faith, a positive attitude, and determination to survive his mother's abuse. In spite of all that had happened, I still felt Father was my protector. Sometimes, several minutes would pass without us talking.
